"LingAM"
(Album,
2013) !recommended!
Download. Fucking Download man! Jesus! I'd completely forgotten about this industrial dance project formed by Dwayne Goettel and cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy fame. Just seeing the name again brought back powerfully positive memories of their Microscopic EP – which I had on constant rotation for a potentially unhealthy period of time following its release in 1996. How is it that acts one likes so much can fall off the radar? It's indeed a strange world in which we live.
Coming on like an almighty punch-up between Juno Reactor and Fluke trading blows in a collapsing skyscraper, LingAM is virtually everything a listener could want from their idm supplier. In Hindu scripture, the lingam is the beginning-less and endless cosmic pillar, symbolizing the infinite nature of Shiva. And the album reflects this. Admirably complex, it just manages to avoid indulging too much, and keeps the beat, no matter how erratic or staccato it frequently is, supporting a diverse range of lead melodies, moods and emotions. The most compelling return to active duty seen in all of last year. 8/10
