[pacificUV Weekends sleeve]"Weekends" (Album, 2012)

Mazarine

On Weekends US band pacificUV achieve a lot by being very understated. Probably best listened to in darkened rooms in the small hours of the weekend (perhaps the inspiration behind that title?), this collection of twelve songs, their third long-player, sounds a bit like the score to a David Lynch film - but with all the dreaminess and little of the darkness.

With its vocodered lyrics, synth hooks and strumming guitar work Ballerina sounds like the output that might have been produced by a collaboration between the early incarnations of Air and New Order. Elsewhere, Funny Girl really pulls the pacificUV mix of 60s, post-rock and slowcore influences out the bag – a joyful three-and-a-half minutes of anyone's time. Whilst Just 4 Kix nails the psychedelic, shoegaze side of pacificUV's personality. 8/10
