"Basic
Instincts EP" (EP, 2005)
Self Released
Sub-Fusion are Andy Ward and the gloriously-named Nadine Loginova. I'd chanced across Andy's previous project, the enticing ndot at Gossips in 2001 and was impressed with how he'd managed to blend diverse (if remotely referential) influences into a cohesive and distinctive sound of its own. With Sub-Fusion the make up is a bit different, but this follow-up project takes a similarly eclectic range of inspiration and draws them into a new whole.
Take elements from Sneaker Pimps, Haujobb, Massive Attack, add Loginova's occasionally Björk-like voice, and you've a pretty special combination. Opening with title track Basic Instincts was a wise choice. Heavy on the epic sweeping synths, there's no percussion to speak of and the payoff with Nadine's vocals is certainly attention grabbing. Other peaks on this five-tracks EP are Signs of Life and the Ladytron-esque Seagull. As convincing if they're pushing the beats button or letting their more relaxed side drift by. Sub-Fusion are a unique proposition. 7/10
