releases, we come to this absolute cracker from Scotland’s
The Alternative - available as 12" vinyl and download.
The A-side (Antichrist) is, as the keenly observant among you may have spotted, an attack on Christianity (and organised religion in general) and it is fucking GLORIOUS. The intro of church organs and disembodied prayer gives way to seriously fucked-up guitars smashing into the song proper, with an actual tune and not one but TWO really great riffs. The lyrics occasionally stray into pomposity "I was given the gift of life, but the package of this gift was opened by someone else", but generally it nails the hypocrisy and lunacy of religious belief/guilt with unerring accuracy – "Your crown of thorns, it weighs me down, distorts my vision and burdens my mind".
The three songs on the B-side (Warfear, Who's
Sussed, Moral Bondage) are less vital, but still
pretty great. 8/10
