A Better Tomorrow

(John Woo, HK, 1986)

One Hong Kong gangster movie fully deserving the label 'classic'. John Woo's seminal 'heroic bloodshed' epic has received several video releases in the UK and is available in a widescreen subtitled print (along with the original cinema trailer) on the Hong Kong Classics label.

The opening image of star Chow Yun Fat lighting his cigarette with a burning (counterfeit) $100 bill has since become the most memorable image in all modern Hong Kong cinema. What can one say? Stylish, exciting, funny and so cool that it gives James Bond at his best a close run for his money. Highly recommended.
