Branded To Kill

(Suzuki Seijun, Japan, 1967)

Wild and artistic gangster movie from renegade Japanese director Suzuki Seijun. Stunning violence combined with poetic silences, about a hitman who gets involved in a deadly cat and mouse thing with the top underworld killer. Meanwhile, he has to try and make sense of the two women in his life - his wife and mistress - who are also trying to kill him! Shocking tourture scenes (even today) and odd humour keep the viewer unbalanced. Several memorable moments. Reminds me of a Japanese Point Blank. Terrific.
