Words by Shane Hawks, art by Mike Allred, One-shot published by Dark Horse Maverick
Screenwriter and director Shane Hawks may not be familiar to many comics readers, and certainly not to me, but I always like Mike Allred's clean-lined artwork. Conceived as a prequel to Hawks' new film Eyes to Heaven, this comic is dark, disturbing and pretty damn creepy. I guess that means the film's a horror flick.
Opening with a nun praying in the haunted chapel of a hospital filled with unhappy spirits, where "no one ever listens", Feeders is continually, tauntingly disturbing. There's an eerie blue tone over Allred's "widescreen" images, which adds to the spooky effect. A young artist in the hospital is pleased to meet the nun, who he sees as an interesting subject to draw for a change. But both of them harbour dark secrets and the narrative builds up to a sickening crescendo that leaves a bitter taste when you close the cover.
